Pressure sensor
A pressure sensor is a device that is used to measure the pressure of a gas or liquid contained inside a container or pipe. The output of a pressure-sensor is typically an electrical signal that can be measured by a control system, meter etc.
There are many different types of pressure-sensors available, and they can be classified based on the type of pressure being measured (absolute, gauge, or differential), the type of output signal (analog or digital), and the type of sensing element (such as a diaphragm, bellows, or capsule).
Pressure sensors can also be called as the force sensor, as pressure can be called as the force applied to the sensor.
Types of pressure sensors/Force sensor
There are several different types of pressure sensors, including:
- Strain gauge: These sensors use a thin, flexible material that changes resistance when it is deformed by pressure.
- Piezo-resistive: These sensors use a piezoresistor, which is a type of resistor that changes resistance when it is subjected to pressure.
- Capacitive: These sensors use two plates separated by a dielectric material. When pressure is applied, the distance between the plates changes, causing a change in capacitance. The change in capacitance is used to sense the change in pressure.
- Optical: These sensors use a light source and a detector to measure the deflection of a membrane or diaphragm caused by pressure.
- Piezoelectric: These sensors use a piezoelectric material, which generates a voltage when subjected to pressure. And the voltage can easily be measured using meters.
Application of pressure sensor switch
- Industrial: Pressure-sensors can be used to monitor and control industrial processes, such as the pressure in a steam boiler or the flow rate of a fluid in a pipe.
- Automobile sector: Pressure sensors are used in automotive systems to measure the pressure of fluids, such as oil, fuel, and brake fluid. They are also used to monitor tire pressure.
- Medical and health care: Pressure sensors are used in medical devices, such as blood pressure monitors, to measure the pressure of fluids in the body.
- Aviation industry: Pressure-sensors are used in aircraft to monitor the pressure of various fluids and gases, such as hydraulic fluid pressure, tire pressure and engine oil pressure etc.
- Environmental monitoring: Pressure sensors can be used to monitor the pressure of gases in the atmosphere, such as atmospheric pressure, the concentration of greenhouse gases and in metrological weather stations.
- Electronics: Pressure-sensors are used in smartphones, tablets, and other consumer electronics devices to detect changes in pressure, such as when a user touches the screen.
